Kia Futuron Concept

Kia Futuron Concept

You can tell it will soon be the auto show season. Automakers everywhere are showing off concepts or teasing new models and Kia is just one of them. The Korean automaker has shown another potential future car in the Kia Futuron Concept.

In what is very obviously a concept that is nowhere near ready for production, the Kia Futuron has been designed to showcase the future direction of the company. Kia says it wants future cars to be even more dynamic than current ones and this concept shows a strong statement of intent for future models.

The Kia Futuron Concept is a future EV with very little extraneous detailing. Despite the complex shape, there are no door handles, no exterior trim and nothing to break up the sharp lines of the design. Kia says the design is notable “for its pure, smooth form, devoid of ornament”. I think I agree. I like the lack of trim and its simplicity and think more automakers should design like this.

The Futuron is now

The Kia Futuron Concept is an electric SUV concept that is as long as a Jaguar I-Pace and as low as a Hyundai Nexo. It has interesting proportions that would need to be seen and tried before being believed. It also has a high ground clearance, which could add some off road capability to it.

The front end needs study. Kia says the Kia Futuron Concept displays the future of the tiger nose, where it evolves into the tiger face with ‘Star Cloud’ lighting design. That all sounds very fancy but the overall impression I get is that the car buying public aren’t quite ready for that just yet.

The interior is equally fanciful with one piece seating and a ‘flying saucer’ design (Kia’s words), a smooth dashboard, very simple controls and a unique steering wheel. The concept has level 4 autonomy, which will allow you to use those reclining seats to their full potential, which is nice.

There was no mention of motor, batteries or range. Kia did say that the high capacity batteries will be housed as low in the chassis as possible to ensure good balance and drivability. As Kia is working furiously on their EV motors and batteries right now, it makes sense to keep that flexible.

For now, the Kia Futuron Concept is a glimpse into the future. I like the vast majority of the design and can see how it could be integrated into more imminent Kia models. The interior won’t work until cars are more autonomous but the ideas are definitely good ones!
