Kia and Ford win at the 2021 Top Gear Awards

Kia and Ford win at the 2021 Top Gear Awards

While not as high profile as some automotive awards, the Top Gear Awards are nonetheless a customer favourite. Which is good news for Kia and Ford as they both won segments.

The Kia EV6 won crossover of the year while the Ford Mustang Mach-E won family car of the year. The new Ford Bronco also won American Car of the year.

Electrics had a strong showing at the awards, which is a sign of things to come. If Top Gear are accepting EVs, it’s just a matter of time before the rest of us do too!

Top Gear said of the Ford Mustang Kia EV6:

"This is a car that will happily sit between several modes of operation, and also help Kia as a brand make the transition from also-ran to leader…"

Top Gear said of the Ford Mustang Mach-E:

‘"The Mach-E is roomy, swift, and while the EV conversation begins and ends with range, it’s the only contender right now that can give Tesla a headache…"’

They said the following of the Bronco:

"It does what the best American cars have done for the last 60 years or more: introduces you to a carefree world where everything is going your way. It moves to a Motown rhythm…"

We couldn’t agree more!

2021 Kia EV6

It was the same week that the Kia EV6 receive its official EPA combined range.

The standard range EV6 is rated at 232 miles (373km) on a charge. The Long Range RWD EV6 is rated at 310 miles (499km) and the AWD version at 274 miles (441km). That’s not back for a 77.4 kWh battery!

For some reason, the EPA no longer publishes city and highway measures, just combined. But that should be enough to help you make your mind up.

I like the 2021 Kia EV6. It’s an aero design with flowing lines, a low front end, steeply raked windshield and a smart look overall.

The light arrangement is particularly good, with a pair of LED running lights and a central light arrangement.

Talking of lights, the rear arrangement with the light bar and angled elements will take some getting used to, but the rest of the design more than makes up for it.

Inside, the 2021 Kia EV6 has a very slick dashboard arrangement with a pair of digital screens, simple controls and minimal switches.

The central console is attractive and practical at the same time, with cubbies and storage.

The cabin reflects the steady improvements Kia has been making in terms of design, materials, fit and finish. It’s a nice place to be and provides comfortable seating wherever you sit.

With those new range figures and the mature design, the 2021 Kia EV6 is an excellent option for anyone wanting their first EV. It’s accessible, nice to look at and sit in and has enough range to overcome even the most embedded range anxiety.

It’s also spacious, well appointed and nice to drive too. While it hasn’t been officially safety tested yet, given Kia’s record for delivering high scores, there’s no reason to think it won’t place highly.
