Kia adding one new EV model per year for next 7 years

Kia has announced ambitious plans to add at least one new electric model to its lineup per year, every year until 2029.

Kia and Hyundai have gone all-in on electric and have invested billions of dollars to make it happen. We knew the automakers were going all out on EVs, but one model per year for Kia alone is a big statement.

“Thirty percent of our sales will come from electric vehicles by the end of the decade, and we’ll get to 50 percent in the early 2030s,” Eric Watson, Kia Motors America vice president of sales and operations, told Automotive News.

Kia electric

Kia has three EVs available in Canada right now, the EV6, the Soul and the Kia Niro.

The EV6 is the newest EV in the stable and there’s a GT version coming soon with a rumoured 576 hp on tap.

We also know there’s a larger car coming, the EV9 and a couple of electric pickup trucks. Trucks are new ground for Kia and we can’t wait to see what the automaker comes up with.

“The EV9 will open up opportunity for those that need the size of the vehicle, whether it be for hauling kids, going into Costco and loading up all your groceries on a big weekend trip or towing the boat,” Watson told Automotive News.

Kia EV6

The Kia EV6 has been a runaway success for the Korean automaker. They regarded is at ‘one of the most important cars’ in their history, so it’s a good job it works.

The EV6 is a great looking vehicle and shares DNA with the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The Ioniq concentrates on being a practical family car while the EV6 concentrates more on being fun.

From what we have seen so far, it succeeds.

The design is ultra-modern but also accessible. Lots of rounded edges, smooth panels and angles make it something nice to behold without being too out there.

There’s an element of sportiness with low front valance and side sills and a smaller rear valance at the back. A tiny rooftip spoiler adds to the effect without being over the top.

Inside, the Kia EV6 is light and spacious. It has a single dashboard that stretches across the front with wide touchscreen and digital instruments.

The steering wheel has some buttons and there are a few essentials still controlled by switches but everything else is accessed from the touchscreen.

With a range of up to 528km or 328 miles, the Kia EV6 overcomes the range anxiety many drivers suffer from.

With fast charging capability, great looks and what seems to be a fun drive, there’s every reason to think the EV6 is going to be a huge success. We can’t wait to see what the other new models have in store!
