Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid

The showcasing of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler at the LA Auto Show was illuminating for a couple of different reasons. The main one was obviously the unveiling of the newly redesigned Jeep model. The other was the news that there will be a Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid by 2020.

Not a lot of information supporting the news has been released as yet but it is interesting nonetheless. Along with the hybrid four cylinder already announced, Jeep will eventually offer a PHEV version of the Wrangler. While I applaud the intent, I’m not sure how many of these will actually sell.

The Wrangler is known for being rugged and able to take punishment. The Pentastar V6 really is the star of the show and is reliable and capable. It has been used to great effect in the Wrangler and while the torque of the diesel is also increasing anticipation, I’m not sure a PHEV is doing the same thing.

Wrangler PHEV
Rumour central says any Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid would likely use the same unit as in the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. That version is doing very well and performing excellently in tests and in the real world. Using a tried and tested powertrain should help lower development costs and time required to get this version to market.

The one burning question is where will the batteries go? Usually, they are fitted in the chassis under the seating. In the Wrangler, this is where the prop shaft and transfer case live. Even if you put motors on the wheels instead of by the engine, it still needs a decent battery pack to give it credible range.

A Wrangler PHEV not only has to achieve a good distance on the road but also off it too. The system will need to be robust enough to cope with the worst kinds of terrain and still perform when wet, dirty, bashed up and dusty. Doing all that while staying out of the way in what is a modest chassis is one challenge I would love to see the solution to.

Jeep said they will be releasing more details on the Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid in the coming months. We will keep an eye on things to see where and how they develop.
