Jeep Renegade and Compass go plugin hybrid
Posted on March 14, 2019
The Jeep Renegade and Compass were also at the Geneva Motor Show and drawing a respectable crowd. Both these Jeeps are headlining FCAs drive to electrification and offering plug-in hybrids as a first step.
Both concepts offer the same go-anywhere character that Jeep is known for but with a more responsible attitude towards emissions. It’s a tough balance for a brand known for being rugged and no-frills but both the Jeep Renegade and Compass looked the part.
Jeep Renegade plugin hybrid
The Jeep Renegade plugin hybrid will look and feel exactly the same as the current model but will have a single engine option. It will be a 1.3-litre turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor and battery pack. The engine will power the front wheels while the electric motor will power the rear.
Combined output will be around 240hp and the Renegade will be capable of up to 31 miles on electric power with a top speed of 80mph using just electric.
Jeep Compass plugin hybrid
The Jeep Compass plugin hybrid will also look and feel the same and have the same interior space and capability of its standard sibling. It too will use the 1.3-litre turbo four and have the same performance and setup with the gas engine driving the front wheels and electric driving the rear.
The output will be the same as the Renegade but we don’t yet know the electric-only range or top speed.
CO2 emissions for both cars are apparently less than 50g/km.
Jeep went to great lengths to assure everyone that you will still be able to take these two anywhere the standard models can go. In fact, they said these hybrid models with the instant power and torque of the electrically-driven rear wheels may even be able to outperform the standard models in some situations.
This makes sense as the two systems are not connected and having that instant torque at the rear can help get you out of a lot of trouble should you need it.
There was no mention of North American release dates, cost or many other details at the show but we expect some soon. As the US and Canada are by far Jeep’s biggest market, I think it likely that we will begin hearing a lot more about these two over the coming months.
