Is Chrysler an endangered species?

Is Chrysler an endangered species?

Now the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group merger has been agreed, it is inevitably time for consolidation. Do the two automakers need all their brands? Does any new company need 14 brands within its ranks? Will Chrysler survive?

The new company, Stellantis, has 14 main auto brands. They are Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Citroën, DS, Opel, Peugeot and Vauxhall.

Chrysler is one of the brands experts think will be thinned out. With only two main models in its lineup and lots of crossover between Fiat, Lancia, Citroen, Peugeot and Vauxhall, it is ripe for the picking.

We hope it remains though as the Chrysler Pacifica is the best people carrier around right now.

Chrysler isn’t alone in being endangered. Italy’s Lancia is also at risk. With only a single model available in a single market, you have to wonder whether it’s really worth keeping it.

Time will tell I guess. In the meantime, the Chrysler Pacifica is still be king of the minivans so get one while you can!

2021 Chrysler Pacifica

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica is regularly voted the top minivan and for good reason. It’s the obvious choice when moving the family around. It has more space than a crossover and is much more practical than an SUV. It’s the right vehicle at the right time for the right job.

It’s a good looking minivan too. It has a distinct grille and front end, an angled hood and windshield that flows smoothly over the roof and subtle panel detailing down each side.

It’s good looking inside too, with acres of space, lots of light, plenty of headroom and flexible interior spaces. With three rows of seating, optional captain’s chairs and Stow n’ Go, it’s hard to argue against it as a people carrier.

Seating is comfortable and supportive, the new touchscreen is a dream to use and the driving position is commanding and offers great views of the road. There are also lots of cubbies and bins for family stuff and while materials are high quality, they are wipe clean too.

Under that sloped hood is the ever-reliable 3.6-litre Pentastar V6. It delivers 287 hp and powers the front or all wheels through an automatic transmission. AWD is an excellent addition for Canadian buyers but it’s a shame you cannot yet get the hybrid with AWD.

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica comes standard with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control and active lane control. You also have the option of surround view camera in some trims.

Whether or not Chrysler is for the chop, the Pacifica is such a success that it is bound to continue in another guise if it has to. If you don’t want to take the chance, check it out online or in the dealership.
