Spy photographers think they have captured the new Ford Bronco out and about in Michigan. If it is indeed the Bronco, there are going to be quite a few disappointed people out there. The true picture may not be quite so clear though.
Expectation is high for Ford’s upcoming re-release. Along with the Ranger, we are hoping for more sensible sized vehicles that compete with the Jeep Wrangler while offering a bit more style. If this image is indeed the Bronco, it isn’t going to be the model we were hoping for.
The images, courtesy of Left Lane News show a soft-looking SUV with none of the character or angular nature of the renderings we had seen before. While handsome in its own right, it isn’t what many fans wanted. The last time we saw a concept was over ten years ago and the industry has changed a lot since then but our hopes for the Bronco remained.
Some commentators have said the new Bronco looks just like the Everest, but it should be much more than that. However, all may not be as it seems.
The Ford Bronco is due in 2020, that’s three years from now. The spy shot shows a curiously undisguised vehicle with only its front end covered up. This seems odd and at odds with rumours. The new Bronco was supposed to look more like a Wrangler than an Escape or Everest. Plus, Ford execs promised us the Bronco wouldn’t be a re-badged Everest. The vehicle in these images look just like that.
So what do we actually know? Nothing much to be honest. Ford have assured us that it will be unique from the Everest, will not be a glorified Explorer, will be larger than the Bronco II but smaller than the recent Bronco.
Finally, Ford have also stated that the new Bronco is being designed to take on the Jeep Wrangler. The vehicle in the spy shot above clearly is not.
I think the vehicle in the spy shots is not the Bronco. I think it is either a deliberate ploy by Ford to confuse or is something else entirely. It could be a new Explorer, it could even be a U.S. version of a new Everest. What I don’t think it is, is a new Bronco.
Patience really is a virtue in the motor trade and in motoring journalism. I am content to wait for now until Ford release official details or until we get more concrete information on what the Ford Bronco actually is.
