2022 Ford Maverick Hands on Review

I managed to get some hands on time with the 2022 Ford Maverick thanks to a friend who knows people. It’s a compact pickup truck that feeds into the increased market for smaller trucks while still delivering the flexibility we look for in this segment.


The Maverick name has been used on a sedan in North America and an SUV elsewhere, so it’s sets expectations as soon as you hear it.


But this Maverick is nothing like either of those.


This is a brand new compact truck that may drive like a car but it an all new experience. From my brief time with it, I think it’s going to be a hit.


2022 Ford Maverick


The design of the 2022 Ford Maverick is all Ford. It’s a similar shape to the F-150 and Ranger but different enough to be its own beast. It’s a square shape with angular appear and a strange bar across the front grille.


A pair of big lights flank it before sliding into the fender and hood. It’s a utilitarian design but not in a bad way. More workmanlike with some practical touches.


At the back, a modest cargo bed uses a ‘flex bed’ design so the tailgate can be angled for certain types of loads. There are also neat QR code stickers around that play how-to videos when you scan them. That’s a nice touch.


Inside the 2022 Ford Maverick


The interior has been very well thought out. Rather than go for cheap plastics, there are some more innovative materials throughout. There’s a lot of texture, with grained surfaces and some leather-like materials that look and feel better than I’m probably describing them.


Space isn’t at a premium inside either, despite this being a smaller truck. The front two seats are comfortable with lots of space. Rear passengers also have decent head and leg room too.


The Maverick includes an 8” touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, FordPass Connect and WiFi hotspot as an option.


Also optional is premium Bang and Olufsen audio, digital instruments and other features.


Under the hood


The 2022 Ford Maverick has two engine options. The primary engine is a 2.5-litre four cylinder with 94kWh electric motor to deliver a capable hybrid with 191 hp. It uses a CVT transmission to drive the front wheels.


The other engine is a standards 2.0-litre EcoBoost with 250 hp. It uses an 8 speed automatic transmission to drive the front or all wheels.


There’s a lot of safety tech available for the Maverick too. That includes Ford CoPilot 360 with standard Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking and Automatic High Beam Headlamps.


There is also the option to add Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Centering and Evasive Steering Assist.


For anyone who needs a truck for the weekends but don’t want a Ranger or F-150, the Maverick is going to fit the bill. It looks good, drives more like a car and is stable even when empty.


For all those reasons, we think the 2022 Ford Maverick is going to be a surefire hit!
