Get your car ready for winter with these top tips

599 × 396
It is almost that time of year again where the temperature dips and large parts of the country turn white for a few months. That means now is a great time to make sure your car is ready for the cold. Driving safely in winter is about more than changing to winter tyres so check out these top winter driving safety tips from Car Nation Canada.

Get your car serviced
The best time to make sure your car is ready for winter is just before it arrives. That gives us time to fix anything that needs fixing before the cold weather hits. So get your car booked in for a service and let us work our magic. We’ll make sure your car is ready for anything!

Self service
If you’re more of a do it yourself kind of car owner, that’s great. Make sure you check all your fluids, change your coolant for a winter mix where appropriate, check your oil, filter, tyres, battery, windscreen wipers and that your heater works. A quick check for rust, perished seals, belts and pipes, blown bulbs and any leaks or other issues is sensible too.

Top up on antifreeze
We will make sure you have enough antifreeze in your car’s system at the service, but you should also make sure you have enough spare in your garage or home. Depending on how north you live, you might find you go through more than you think.

Keep your fuel above half
Wherever practical, don’t run your car until it hits the reserve light as you never know when you might get stuck. This is especially true if you live outside the city or in the country where you might be sitting still for a while waiting for assistance. Keeping your fuel tank over half full where you can might help you one day.

Put your winter kit in the trunk
Remembering to put your winter kit in the trunk is something else you need to do right now. A change of warm clothes, space blanket, spare water, a tyre pressure gauge, torch and perhaps some food depending on how far from the city you live. You will know best what to pack according to your situation but it won’t do you any good sitting in the garage.

Check your wiper blades
Our wiper blades have to contend with a lot during the average winter so make sure yours are in good condition and have plenty of life left in them. We can change them at the service if you like. Having spares around doesn’t hurt either.

Preparing your car for winter is part of Canadian living but if you would prefer to have the professionals do it for you, book it in to your nearest Car Nation Canada dealership. We’ll take care of everything for you!
