Get ready for winter: 2018 Mazda CX-5

In a new series for this year, I am beginning a spotlight on winter series that will highlight AWD vehicles that can help you survive the Canadian winter. Each week I’m going to discuss a capable 4x4 vehicle that you may not have thought of. All of these vehicles will have AWD and be capable of transporting you and your family in comfort and safety this winter.

For the first focus on winter, I’m going to talk about the 2018 Mazda CX-5. It isn’t the first vehicle you might think of when you consider a winterproof crossover but it really should be.

2018 Mazda CX-5
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover that doesn’t feel small. It has a very contemporary design with the signature Mazda grille, curved hood, low front and curved roof. That roof rolls round to an accessible tailgate and tidy rear end. With simple panel design, decent ground clearance and that all-important AWD, this is a great contender for winters in Canada.

The first thing you think of when driving the 2018 Mazda CX-5 is that it is poised. Whatever the conditions, whatever the road surface, the CX-5 handles it with ease. The suspension and chassis are tuned to perfection and offer a composed ride without feeling too firm or too soft. Body roll is minimal and bumps and potholes are almost undetectable thanks to some very well designed suspension.

Inside, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 has a high end feel with good material quality and excellent finishing. Lots of glass ensures good visibility and lots of light and generous passenger space ensures adults can sit in any seat without feeling squashed. Cargo space isn’t the largest but should do for the grocery shop or weekend visit to the store.

Power to the people
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 has a single engine option, the 2.5-litre four cylinder. It produces 187 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque and distributes it via a six speed automatic transmission to all wheels. The engine has a neat cylinder deactivation feature that turns one or two off when not required. This saves gas mileage and is completely undetectable while driving.

The other neat thing about the 2018 Mazda CX-5 is electric power steering. It keeps things very responsive and light and works with the AWD system to help you remain on the road and confident in the car’s ability to keep you safe. The CX-5 comes with low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert. It can also feature full automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, active lane control, adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning depending on the trim you choose.

The 2018 Mazda CX-5 offers excellent value for money, almost luxury sedan levels of comfort, decent safety technology and a very refined ride. All for a very good price. It is certainly able to cope with anything our winters can throw at it and still keep on going. Visit Mazda of Hamilton, 1977 Upper James Street Hamilton, ON L9B 1K8 to learn more about it.
