Does a Full Car Service History Increase it's Value?

Does a Full Car Service History Increase it's Value?

Are you planning to sell or trade in your old car anytime soon? Wondered just how much difference a full car service history has on it's value?

It’s a question that has come up a few times over the past couple of months with all the changes in car values. That’s why we asked our team to find out how much difference it actually makes.

Service history and used cars

If you want to sell your car to a dealership or even privately, one question guaranteed to come up is around service history.

A car’s service history is a glimpse at how the car has been cared for over it’s time. A car with a service history has a much more provable provenance. We can see how well it has been looked after, see how well it has been maintained and repaired and we have a good idea of the condition of the engine and moving parts.

A car without a service history is an unknown quantity. We don’t know what condition the engine is in. We don’t know how old the belts are or the water pump is and we don’t know how often the oil has been changed.

All those things feed into the value of that car.

Full Car Service history and values

When you sell your car to a dealership, the dealer needs to consider how much time and money it will cost to prepare the car for resale. This is known as reconditioning and is something we calculate with every car we buy.

There is no set amount a service history can add to the value of a car. Much depends on the make, model and year of the car.

For the majority of cars, you can expect a car with a service history to be worth anything from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand dollars more, depending on the value, age and mileage.

A car with a full service history is less of an unknown quantity. A car with a recent service stamp may not need a full service to prepare it for sale, which saves time and money.

Money we can pass on to you in the valuation we provide.

A car without a service history is an unknown quantity. We have to assume the worst so will need to give the car a full major service. That takes time, parts and money. All things that cost us before we can sell the car.

That cost will be reflected in the valuation we offer you.

So while it’s impossible to put a number on how much more a car with a service history is worth, it is very definitely worth more.

That’s why we, and most other dealerships are so hot on keeping your car serviced. It isn’t just about reliability you know!
