Ford trucks celebrate centenary
Posted on August 2, 2017
It was 100 years ago that the first Ford truck rolled off the production line. The original Model TT entered production in 1917 and cost $600. It sold over 1.3 million of them during its 11 year run before being replaced by the Model AA.
July 27 1917 saw the first complete Model TT roll off the line. They kept coming until 1928 when the model was replaced. It was the first ‘proper’ truck. Where other manufacturers had merely modified a standard car with a load bed, Henry Ford designed a complete vehicle around a new truck chassis. Designed initially for farmers, they were built tough. Something that remains today.
Since then we have seen the Model AA which was a 1.5 ton truck. It also had a better engine, better chassis and more style. The first flathead V8 model arrived in 1932. After a brief hiatus for World War Two, the first F-series truck arrived in 1948. It was one of the first of a completely new generation of vehicles ready for the post-war world.
The F1 started what the current F-150 continues. The First F-150 rolled out in 1975 followed by the F-250 and F-350. The F-150 has been North America’s best-selling truck for over 35 years and shows no sign of slowing down despite fierce competition.
The built strong philosophy has remained and is one of the reasons Ford trucks remain popular. With continued development of all Ford trucks, especially the F-150, there is no reason to think it won’t still be a best-seller in another 35 years’ time.
