Ford to use OTA updates for the first time
Posted on May 25, 2017
Over The Air (OTA) updates are something that has been on the horizon for a while now and it will soon be a reality according to Ford. The Blue Oval have said that they will be adding Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to its Sync 3-equipped 2016 range over the coming months over the air.
OTA uses wireless technology to download software updates without having to use a USB drive or hardware connector. Much like your cellphone receives updates while connected to the network, your car will soon be receiving updates in much the same way.
If your 2016 Ford has Sync 3 with Wi-Fi, you will soon have the option to automatically download software updates that will enable Android Auto. For now, Apple CarPlay requires a dealer visit to upgrade the USB hub, but soon it too will be able to update over the air.
This new OTA system is an option, so if you prefer to still rely on your dealership to perform updates during a service, you can. If you prefer to obtain a USB drive with the update and do it yourself, you can do that too.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay offer a lot of features for car owners with the hardware to make the most of them. Both systems offer a range of apps and both use your infotainment system to work but they work in similar ways.
Both systems use your smartphone to ‘cast’ onto your car’s infotainment system and access apps, music, radio and more. Essentially, they turn your car touchscreen into an extra smartphone screen with the same look and feel. Both systems mimic their smartphone design and work in much the same way. If you are comfortable using a phone, you can use Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
As well as offering a huge range of apps and access to your music and media, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay both have one other significant advantage, fast updates. The usual update cycle for a car is slow compared to technology and cars were falling way behind in terms of features and benefits compared to smartphones.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay changes that by allowing incremental or steady updates to the system without having to upgrade hardware. OTA updates take this one step further. Rather than having to wait until a service or schedule updates with a dealership, you will soon have the option to receive updates via Wi-Fi.
