The Ford Mustang Mach-E Police Car is Coming to NYC

Not long after the news that the new electric Ford is being used as a New York taxi, more news from the Big Apple arrives telling us the same car will also become a cop car.

New York city has bought 184 Ford Mustang Mach-Es and will have them retrofitted to become cop cars across the city.

Many of those will become cop cars while others will be used by other first responders.

The city will be using the Mustang Mach-E GT for cop cars. This variant delivers up to 480 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque along with around 270 miles of range.

That’s plenty fast enough to get anywhere in the city quickly or chase down bad guys across city streets. The newly installed 29 fast chargers specific for cop use should help keep cops mobile, while the 103 public chargers offer much wider coverage if required.

“This order of all-electric Mach-Es will enable our law enforcement agencies to put electric models to the full test and work out maintenance, lights and sirens, charging, and other operational issues,” Keith Kerman, DCAS deputy commissioner, said in a statement. “It is a critical step towards our goal of a fully electric fleet.”

Ford Mustang Mach-E

We have covered the Ford Mustang Mach-E a lot on this blog but we’re unashamed of that and will continue to do so.

Few cars in recent history have shaken up the industry in quite the same way. Tesla did something similar, but was able to forge its own way without a century of history to bring along with it.

Ford has done something truly special with the Ford Mustang Mach-E. They built a completely new car in a completely new way while not leaving their heritage behind.

Sure, using the Mustang name could be viewed as a cynical ploy but the car delivers on every promise it makes.

Design and cabin

The design is great and is one of the most successful things about the car. It’s a crossover style design with a low front end, Mustang-style lights and smooth lines.

It’s an aero design that starts small and flows upwards from the windshield to give us a spacious, light cabin. The rear lights are also reminiscent of the Mustang but that’s as close to the pony car as you’ll get.

The cabin is superb with comfortable seating and a familiar design to anyone who has owned a recent Ford. The new huge touchscreen is a departure but works well, especially in portrait mode. This is something other automakers are doing and it works well.

We don’t know how the Mach-E will be configured as a cop car but as a ‘normal’ car, it works well.

A 10-80% charge takes 38 minutes at a 100kW rapid charger, so you’re never hanging around for long and a fairly accurate mileage estimate means you can predict how far you can go on a single charge.

What more do you need from an EV?
