Ford Mustang Mach 1 making a comeback

Ford Mustang Mach 1 making a comeback

In news that will surprise nobody, Ford is making another variant of its pony car, the Ford Mustang Mach 1. As one of the few car models left in the lineup, the Dearborn automaker is throwing everything at it to ensure it meets every possible expectation from buyers.

The Ford Mustang Mach 1 is a track oriented car that will sit alongside the awesome GT350 and GT500 to deliver the goods on track for Ford.

After an absence of almost 18 years, the legendary nameplate is making a welcome return. After ending production in 1979 and a brief return in 2003, this is the first time a new Mach 1 model has been manufactured since that time.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Ford are keeping a lot of the details to itself right now but we know the Mach 1 will remain track oriented. The automaker made the announcement last week but didn’t go into much detail.

“Mach 1 has a special place in Mustang history, and it’s time for this special edition to claim the top spot in our 5.0-liter V-8 performance lineup and reward our most hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who demand that next level of power, precision and collectability,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford Icons.

“Like the original, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 will be true to its heritage, delivering great looks (while being) the most track-capable 5.0-liter Mustang ever.”

Faster than a Bullitt

Ford has yet to confirm anything but the popular belief is that the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 will sit above the Bullitt in the lineup. It will take the middle ground between the Bullitt and the GT350/GT500 to deliver something a little different without impacting anyone else’s market share.

That likely means a 5.0-litre V8 engine with around 500 hp. If the Bullitt delivers 480 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, you can expect a slight elevation of those numbers for the Mach 1.

Other speculation says the Mach 1 will come standard with the GT Performance Pack Level 2 which includes wider Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, stiffer suspension, stiffer sway bars, slightly lowered ride height and uprated Brembo brakes.

The spy shots provided by Ford show a rear spoiler and huge exhausts too. Whether these are real or just for show remains to be seen but both look the part!

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 will be limited in numbers although no details were provided. The price wasn’t announced either but expect it to be priced similarly to the Bullitt, if not a little more.

Ford will release more details closer to release. As we don’t expect this model until late 2021 or early 2022, there is still time to enjoy current Mustang models before then.
