If there remains people out there who think electric is not the future because it’s no fun at all, I suggest checking out the new Ford performance car. The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400.
Anyone who likes drag racing will already be acquainted with the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400. It’s an electric drag racer with the equivalent of 1,400 hp under the hood. That means this car can do the quarter mile in under 8 seconds. Considering a tuned Challenger Demon can make it in around 10 seconds, that’s quite the achievement!
Cobra Jet
The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 isn’t the first Cobra Jet. That started back in 1968 with the original Mustang Cobra Jet. It was a pure race car with a modified 428 engine that delivered 410 hp. The car had all the hallmarks of a classic and are now collectors’ items.
This new one is unlikely to become that iconic but should deliver the same raw excitement the original one did in its time.
Cobra Jet 1400
The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 is different to the ‘standard’ Cobra Jet with the modified V8. This one is pure electric. As normal production has stopped for the foreseeable future, it gives automakers time for special projects and this is one of them.
"This project was a challenge for all of us at Ford Performance, but a challenge we loved jumping into,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director for Ford Performance Motorsports.
“We saw the Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing electric powertrains in a race car package that we already had a lot of experience with, so we had performance benchmarks we wanted to match and beat right now. This has been a fantastic project to work on, and we hope the first of many coming from our team at Ford Performance Motorsports."
As the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 is a prototype, there have been no details on the motor, range or much else. All we know is that it is built on the Mustang chassis and delivers 1,400 hp and over 1,100 lb-ft of torque through a pair of huge rear tires.
There is also no news on whether this car will ever make it to the drag strip for real, although we think it will. Ford mentioned there is some kind of reveal planned for drag racing fans later this year. It may not be the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, but it could be.
