Ford Maverick named Green Truck of the Year

Ford Maverick named Green Truck of the Year

One the one hand, it seems ludicrous to have a ‘Green Truck of the Year’ award. Trucks are many things but they are not green. Yet, it also gives truck manufacturers something to aim for.

Just because current trucks are far from green, doesn’t mean they never will be.

The Ford Maverick was named Green Truck of the Year because of its fuel efficiency and more practical dimensions. It’s a truck that everyone could use, small enough for city streets yet practical enough to haul whatever you need.

“Ford’s Maverick is a milestone vehicle offering pickup enthusiasts an affordable choice that’s highly fuel efficient, functional, and right-sized for everyday use,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com.

Other winners at the event include:

  • Green Car of the Year - Audi Q4 e-tron
  • Luxury Green Car of the Year - Lucid Air
  • Urban Green Car of the Year - Chevrolet Bolt EUV
  • Commercial Green Car of the Year - BrightDrop EV600
  • Performance Green Car of the Year - Tesla Model S Plaid
  • Green SUV of the Year - Hyundai Ioniq 5

That’s a real mix of vehicles!

2021 Ford Maverick

We like the Ford Maverick because it fulfills a gap in the market. A small truck designed for everyday use that gets more than single figures for gas mileage.

It’s a simple design done well. Simple lines, unadorned panels, rounded fenders and a simple front end. It’s probably harder to make something so simple look so good but Ford have done it.

The front end manages to look like a truck without trying to be imposing or outmuscle the competition. The simple light bar works well and those shaped headlights add a unique aesthetic, although they will be expensive to replace.

Inside, the truck is basic but comfortable. Seats are very comfortable, especially up front. They are adjustable, have just enough support for taller drivers and work well.

Then there’s the storage. There are cubbies everywhere, storage for two phones, water bottle holders, rear storage and pockets in each door.

Under the hood

Under the hood is either a 2.5-litre four cylinder hybrid engine that produces 191 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque or a 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder that produces 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque.

The hybrid uses a CVT transmission to drive the front wheels while the turbo uses an 8 speed automatic to drive the front or all wheels.

While not overpowered, five switchable driving modes means you can adapt driving manners to each situation. Those modes are Normal to Eco, Slippery, Sport, and Tow/Haul, with obvious uses given their name.

The Maverick comes standard with automatic emergency braking and automatic high beams. Active lane control, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitors are available as options.

Whether you buy the Maverick because of its green credentials or for any other reason, it’s a solid buy. It’s modern, easy to drive and delivers everything it promises.
