The Ford F-150 Lightning Is Already A Huge Hit

The Ford F-150 Lightning Is Already A Huge Hit

The new Ford truck was unveiled last week and had gained over 20,000 reservations within 24 hours. The Ford F-150 Lightning is the long awaited electric truck to supplement the already class leading truck family.

We knew the truck would be popular but even we didn’t know just how popular!

The Ford F-150 Lightning is the electric version of Ford’s bestselling truck. It’s all-electric and was unveiled last week at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.

Reservations can be made online.

Ford F-150 Lightning

The Ford F-150 Lightning looks similar to the existing truck and that’s a good thing. It’s similar enough to appeal to existing truck fans while being different enough to appeal to a whole new audience.

The familiar shape is the same but the grille and lighting arrangement is slightly different. There is more of a design up front, with less chrome and fewer vents.

A new set of alloy wheels also marks it out as different.

Inside is supposed to be different too. You get a flat floor as there’s no prop shaft and almost 50/50 weight distribution thanks to how the batteries are laid out.

This should have distinct advantages for driving and handling rather than the front-heavy characteristics of the standard F-150.

Engine and drivetrain

While the design looks amazing, it’s the drivetrain that’s the big news here.

There will be two motor options, a standard range model with the equivalent of 426 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque and a range of up to 230 miles.

There’s also an extended range version with the equivalent of 563 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque and a range of up to 300 miles.

The truck will have a motor on each axle giving it all wheel drive. Standard range models can tow up to 5,000 pounds and carry 2,000 pounds. An optional tow kit increases tow capacity up to 7,700 pounds.

The extended version can tow up to 10,000 pounds but only carry 1,850 due to the extra batteries.

The truck has an optional Charge Station Pro that you can install at home to sped up charging too. Presumably this will be similar to other EVs, offering high capacity charging in a relatively short amount of time.

We don’t know exact numbers yet but some reports say the Ford F-150 Lightning has a 0-60 time of around 3.5 seconds, which is faster than Ford’s claimed 4.5 seconds.

The Ford F-150 Lightning is due next year and the website is still accepting reservations. That won’t guarantee you a truck at release but if your name’s not down…
