Ford F-150 Lightning Production Doubled to Keep up with Demand

Ford F-150 Lightning Production Doubled to Keep up with Demand

We thought the new Ford F-150 Lightning would be popular but with over 200,000 reservations already, even the most optimistic of us didn’t realise just how popular!

This has led Ford to double production of the electric truck to help keep up.

It’s the second time Ford has had to increase production and probably won’t be the last.

This doubling of production means the order books are likely to reopen soon, having been temporarily paused due to demand.

While you have been able to reserve a spot in line with $100 deposit, no actual orders have been processed for a little while now.

“With nearly 200,000 reservations, our teams are working hard and creatively to break production constraints to get more F-150 Lightning trucks into the hands of our customers,” said Kumar Galhotra, Ford’s president of The Americas & International Markets Group.

“The reality is clear: People are ready for an all-electric F-150 and Ford is pulling out all the stops to scale our operations and increase production capacity.”

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is an all-electric truck designed to deliver the same features and convenience of the standard F-150 with the green credentials of an EV.

The name builds on the heritage created by the original Lightning truck back in the day, but this is an all new vehicle.

That original had a big V8 while this latest version has an all electric motor and a battery pack that should be good for up to 300 miles.

The design is largely similar to the standard F-150 with imposing front end, huge hood and simple profile. There’s an attractive light bar that flows across the width of the grille and round the lights, which marks it out as something special.

Aside from very minor changes and a charging port, the truck looks exactly like you expect.

The exterior, interior, load bed and extras all closely resemble what’s currently available for the F-150.

Under the hood

The main differences are under the hood. Instead of a gas or diesel engine, you have an electric motor that can generate an estimated 563 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque.

The motor uses either a Standard Range 98 kWh battery pack with up to 230 miles or range of an Extended Range 131. kWh battery for up to 300 miles.

You can charge it from a standard wall outlet or use a fast charger sold by Ford or around your city. Charging should take the Lightning from 15% battery up to 80% battery in 44 minutes using a fast charging station.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning will come with standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.

You’ll also have the option for adaptive cruise control with BlueCruise semi-autonomous driving mode.
