Ford documentary gives backstory to the Mustang Mach-E

If you have ever wondered about the process of bringing a car from idea to production, this documentary from Ford will help. It explains what went on behind closed doors to come up with the concept, the compliance car, the name and the end product. It isn’t the usual self-promotional puff-piece, it is actually interesting to watch.

The documentary runs to around 20 minutes and covers the design and technology but mostly concentrates on the name. A lot of time is spent explaining why Ford went with Mustang in the name and the resulting ramifications of doing that. From having to ‘honour’ the name to pulling design influences from past Mustang cars, the name had a huge influence over the end result.

I don’t actually think the Mustang Mach-E looks that much like a Mustang. The only real link between the two cars are the lights and the pony badge. Other than that, lots of other vehicles have curved hoods, complicated panel detailing, and leather interiors.

The lights definitely show their Mustang roots. Both front and rear look a lot like the lights of recent variants of the pony car. The rest of the design? Not so much to my eyes. That’s no bad thing though as I think the design is actually very good. It flows, has a unique persona and looks both sport and special.

The interior is the same. The dashboard has an elegant simplicity that works well. The touchscreen will take some getting used to but Tesla owners seem to have gotten used to theirs so I don’t see that as an issue. But aside from the double stitching and the Mustang badge, I don’t see much similarity.

The Mustang Mach-E is a great looking vehicle with the right amount of road presence and style. The interior has been well thought out, the motors deliver decent power and the range is pretty good too.

One version of the Mustang Mach-E will have ‘normal’ range while a specific Extended Range trim will be revealed which will presumably go further. Charging can be done with 100v or 240v domestic outlets or a Ford fast charger.

I am very much looking forward to getting hands-on with the Mustang Mach-E. Despite my doubts about the link to its namesake, I think it has huge potential as a car. Not only for Ford but for the world at large. If this car succeeds, it could change our opinion on EVs forever!
