The first Canadian 2017 Ford GT was delivered to its lucky owner last week. One of the first to put their name down for the new fast Ford, the new owner took delivery at a special ceremony at the Calabogie Motorsport Park in Ontario.
Even though the GT is manufactured in Ontario at the new Multimatic plant in Markham, most of those cars already completed have gone to the US. It is only now that anyone outside America has received their order. As only a thousand are being produced per year the waiting list is long.
Nevertheless, it is entirely possible that we will see the blue GT on the road around Ontario over the next few months. I know I would be driving my GT everywhere if I had one!
2017 Ford GT
The reception to the 2017 Ford GT could not have been predicted. Sure we knew that Ford diehards would love it but we had no idea of the almost universal love the car has received since that initial announcement. With order books full for the foreseeable future, it seems enough people like the car to consider spending the money to own one.
The design is awesome in every respect. Awesome because it honours the legacy of the GT as well as managing to be completely modern. The very low slung body looks like it’s moving even when standing still and you need to climbing down into it, not just sit in it. Low ground clearance, seriously aero shape and all that detailing makes a feast for the eyes.
The interior is all about the driver. Static bucket seats, minimal centre stack and driver-oriented controls are the order of the day. That isn’t to say it isn’t well put together or unpleasant because it is neither of those. It is race oriented and that’s it. The pedals and steering wheel move and once you find the position, you find yourself surprisingly comfortable.
The 2017 Ford GT uses a 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost engine. With twin turbochargers and a Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, it thrusts its 647 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels with ease. The engine looks small in its bay but packs quite a punch. The many naysayers of the V6 have been silenced with the critical acclaim this engine in this car has received and it seems to be going down well with owners too.
The 2017 Ford GT obviously isn’t a car for everyone as it costs more than a house, but for those lucky few there are not many other cars that look as good or drive as well. Not for this price anyway.
