FCA working with Google on autonomous minivan project

FCA working with Google on autonomous minivan project

599 × 399
We had heard whispers that the two giants were planning to work together on some kind of minivan project but until last week we didn’t know what. Now we know that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Google will be working on autonomous Chrysler Pacifica prototype vehicles.

The project will utilize the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica, the redesigned people carrier released last year. FCA will initially produce 100 of these special editions to help drive the project forward. They will be modified to handle Google’s extra hardware, sensors and processors but are expected to remain largely the same elsewhere.

"Working with Google provides an opportunity for FCA to partner with one of the world's leading technology companies to accelerate the pace of innovation in the automotive industry," said FCA chief Sergio Marchionne.
"The experience both companies gain will be fundamental to delivering automotive technology solutions that ultimately have far-reaching consumer benefits."

Where the project will lead is anyone’s guess but FCA and Google teams will be working together in Michigan until something happens.

2017 Chrysler Pacifica
The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is an all-new people carrier that sets a new benchmark in the segment. It replaces the Chrysler Town & Country and offers a stylish take on the family hauler with decent driving manners, good levels of equipment, interior space and comfort.

The design is modern, aerodynamic and pretty slick given the obvious limitations with the required dimensions of a people carrier. The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is long, has a very sloped hood, windshield and a fairly flat roof. The side panels have a fluted detail along the side to add interest and chrome trim throughout.

Inside, the cabin is spacious and shows just how far FCA have come in terms of materials and finishing quality. The dashboard is tidy, with the new gear selector knob to the right of the steering wheel. There is plenty of space for passengers, lots of storage in all rows and some cargo space in the rear too.

Under the hood is a 3.6-litre V6 engine that produces 287 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the front via a nine speed automatic transmission. There is also a hybrid option that uses the same engine but bolts on a 16kWh battery motor and a CVT transmission.

As you would expect, trim levels and options are plentiful. The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica comes in LX, Touring, Touring-L, Touring-L Plus and Limited trims and offer everything from LED running lights to power liftgate and pretty much everything in-between.

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica scales new heights in people moving. Visit Parkway Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Mississauga, 2260 Battleford Road, Mississauga, ON, L5N 3K6 to see for yourself!
