FCA getting cash boost from Ontario government

FCA getting cash boost from Ontario government

In what must be a welcome sweetener, the Ontario administration will be giving Fiat Chrysler Automobiles up to $85.8 million as an incentive to keep producing cars in Windsor.

The announcement, made last week by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, is designed to keep the automaker in the area as a major employer. The majority of the incentive is earmarked for production of the Chrysler Pacifica minivan that is being made in Windsor. Some is also going to the FCA's Automotive Research and Development Centre, also in Windsor.

"To continue delivering on our government's No. 1 priority, grow the economy and create new jobs, we have to be looking ahead as Chrysler is looking ahead," said Wynne in an interview.

Considering FCA has just spend a couple of billion dollars in Windsor preparing their R&D facility and retooling for the Chrysler Pacifica, one has to wonder whether they needed further incentive to stay there.

2017 Chrysler Pacifica
The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is an all-new vehicle that replaces the Town & Country. While we loved the T&C, it was badly in need of replacement and the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is a big step forward. It looks great, has lots of technology, good engines and immense attention to detail.

The minivan market may be small but it is still lucrative. Currently dominated by the Odyssey and the Sienna, the Pacifica is a domestic challenger that should give the two incumbents a real run for their money.

The Pacifica is a new minivan built afresh. The design is sleek and brings a friendliness to the segment. The rounded edges, nice panel design, aero front and tidy rear end all provide a profile that will be very easy to live with. Add lots of family-friendly practicalities and you have a worthy successor to the T&C.

Inside, the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica looks great. The driving position is part driver, part starship captain thanks to the new rotary shifter and control station in the centre stack. Visibility is fantastic all around, interior space is generous and every seat has lots of room for legs, head and stuff. Talking of stuff, there are plenty of cubbies, pockets and bins throughout the vehicle. Even the busiest family will have a hard time filling them all!

Driving the Pacifica is the standard FCA 3.6-litre V6 engine that is as tried and tested as they come. Paired with a nine speed automatic transmission, the motor delivers 287 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The combination is smooth and refined and the Pacifica is quiet and comfortable both in the city and on the highway.
