Ford Electric Pickup Is Given The Name "Lightning"

The long awaited Ford Electric Pickup has finally been announced, and it will be called the Lightning. It’s a neat play on words, lightning for electricity and to reminisce about a sports truck from the 1990s.

The electric F-150 has been talked about, rumoured, speculated and formed part of the conversation for months. Now finally we know its name and the fact it will be revealed May 19 2021.

“Every so often, a new vehicle comes along that disrupts the status quo and changes the game … Model T, Mustang, Prius, Model 3. Now comes the F-150 Lightning,” Ford President and CEO Jim Farley said in a statement.

“America’s favorite vehicle for nearly half a century is going digital and fully electric. F-150 Lightning can power your home during an outage; it’s even quicker than the original F-150 Lightning performance truck; and it will constantly improve through over-the-air updates.”

We even have a teaser video:

The doesn’t show us much but does hint as a potential front end and light setup, although the video does say it’s a rendering.

We don’t expect the new electric F-150 Lightning to use the V8 of its forbears, but it will likely have similar performance. We don’t actually know what to expect in terms of looks but we imagine it won’t be too dissimilar to the current truck to avoid alienating the existing fan base.

That said, it will also have to be different enough to make it appealing to a new audience.

At least we only have a couple of days to wait to find out!

2021 Ford F-150

The Ford F-150 truck is a genuine best seller. Everyone owns, has owned or has driven one and it keeps getting better.

This latest version is the best yet.

It’s good looking, well put-together and practical. All things a modern truck should be. It’s also easy to drive, to handle around town and to own on a day to day basis.

All things we hope a modern truck to be.

This version has some excellent engines in the 3.3-litre V6, 2.7-litre turbocharged V6, 5.0-litre V8, 3.5-litre V6 and the 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6. The newer 3.5-litre hybrid V6 is now also an option.

All use Ford’s superb 10 speed automatic with a mix of RWD and AWD.

XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited trims have a ton of options, different cabs and load bed options and a whole host of interior features to choose from.

Those interiors are worthy of note. You can have your truck as basic as can be with vinyl and wipe down plastics, or go the other way with soft touch materials and lashings of leather. There is a middle ground too, with lots of upholstery and technology options.

Talking of technology, you can have your F-150 with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, automatic high beams, Ford Co-Pilot 2.0, blind spot monitors with rear cross-traffic alerts, parking sensors, automatic emergency rear braking, post-collision braking system, adaptive cruise control, surround view cameras, rain sensing wipers, adaptive steering and a whole lot more.

You can also opt for Active Drive Assist with adds an element of automation with cameras and radars for a little extra safety.

The 2021 Ford F-150 is a top class truck suitable for everyday use, work, rest or play. No wonder it’s so popular!
