Downtown Montreal to trial EV-only access

Downtown Montreal to trial EV-only access

640 × 480
Montreal have announced plans to offer 1,000 public EV charging station to the city while also restricting certain areas of Downtown to electric vehicles only. The move is one of many the city is taking to increase uptake in low emission cars.

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre, Aref Salem, the city’s transportation chief and Elsie Lefebvre head of the city vehicle electrification strategy made the announcement last week. They are planning to encourage low emission vehicles as much as they possibly can over the next decade or so, beginning next month.

The trio also announced 50 EV charging stations will be installed in Montreal during the summer, with more to come later. A total of 1,000 such charging stations will be spread throughout the city by 2020 in the ambitious plan. The other part of that plan is to restrict access to parts of Downtown to electric vehicles only. There were no details of the how as yet.

2016 Kia Soul EV
The 2016 Kia Soul EV is in its second year and is making serious headway in offering sensibly priced electric motoring to the masses. Not only does it look pretty cool, it also delivers good driving characteristics and few of the usual downsides EVs have.

The design is almost identical to the gas powered Kia Soul. There is little to distinguish it from the petrol model aside from the covered grille and signature alloys. The design is simple but effective. A rounded front end with lots of bodywork, small lights, little wheels a rising beltline and slightly sloped roof. The windows are angular, probably the only angle on the entire car aside from the rear pillar.

Inside, the cabin is a nice place to be. It is very modern with premium materials throughout. Certainly higher quality than you might expect at this price point. The EV origin of the Soul is indicated once more with special dials and a panel on the touchscreen that shows battery power and other measurements.

The 2016 Kia Soul EV is powered by a 90kW electric motor and a 27kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It has the equivalent of 109 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque sent to the front wheels via a single speed transmission.
Charging at 240V takes up to five hours from empty, use the quick charge DC port for a 0–80% charge in 33 minutes. Range is approximately 93 miles with normal driving.

Considering the low price, the 2016 Kia Soul EV represents excellent value for money. With quality materials, decent range, quick charging and lots of extras, the car is a great first foray into electric motoring.
