Dodge offers software update to reduce car thefts

Dodge is famous for many things but being the most stolen cars in the US is something the automaker probably doesn’t like very much. That’s perhaps why the company has released a software update to help reduce thefts of the Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger.

The Dodge Challenger and the Dodge Charger are the most stolen cars in America. We know all why. The combination of rugged good looks, awesome power and intense desirability means everyone wants one, even if they cannot afford one.

The 6.4-liter Hemi and the supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 cars are notoriously popular with thieves and this is the model being targeted with this update.

A new software update was released last week to stop thefts of the very popular V8s.

“Dodge is launching a new owner-customized ‘double verification’ security system,” said Tim Kuniskis, Dodge Brand chief executive officer at Stellantis.

“When flashed into the computer of affected 2015 or newer Dodge muscle cars, the protective software will limit the engine output to less than 3 horsepower, foiling fast getaways and joyrides.”

Power to the people

The innovative new update can be flashed for free by a Dodge dealer. The system update enforces a second level authentication system that will limit the output of the car to just 2.8 hp if stolen.

The system uses a simple 4 digit PIN that you enter when you start the car. With the PIN, you have all the power available. Without it, you have just 2.8 hp.

It’s a novel take on two-factor authentication we use online. That second factor uses a much more difficult method for a thief to steal, in this case, a PIN number. It takes just a couple of seconds to enter it into the Uconnect 4C infotainment system so shouldn’t be too much of a hassle for owners.

Unfortunately, for the moment, the update is only available for the 6.4-liter Hemi or the supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V8. Presumably, similar solutions are being developed for other Dodge models to help round out the protection.

Protect what’s yours

We think this is an excellent improvement. It’s simple to implement, simple to activate and offers more protection from thieves and key-spoofers.

Anyone who has had a car stolen knows that empty feeling inside when you realize your pride and joy has gone. Anything that can prevent that has to be a good thing. If that something is as simple as a four digit PIN, all the better!

It will also help prevent the police being involved in so many high speed chases and work to protect the public from harm once the cars have been stolen too.

Dodge said this isn’t the last improvement the company will be making to vehicle security. They didn’t say what was coming next, just that they weren’t done protecting customer’s vehicles.
