Dodge named alongside Porsche as most appealing auto brand

Dodge has outperformed the competition in the latest J.D. Power APEAL study. It, alongside Porsche, has topped the chart in a survey that measures how automakers deliver on customer expectations.

Dodge topped the mainstream brand category while Porsche topped the luxury brand category and won overall.

That’s as well as topping the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study earlier this year alongside Kia.

“These ratings are consistent with our continuing focus on improving the ownership experience for our customers,” Mark Champine, Head of Quality, FCA North America, said in a statement. “Our focus will not waver, nor will our efforts.”

The APEAL study

The APEAL study, Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout, is run by JD Power and is designed to identify how automakers and their products deliver on expectations. It’s more a ‘what did they do right’ rather than the usual ‘what did they do wrong’ survey.

“Purchasing the ‘right’ vehicle is influenced by a variety of factors, depending on each buyer’s specific tastes, wants and needs,” said Dave Sargent, J.D. Power president of automotive quality.

“The APEAL Study measures an owner’s emotional attachment to their new vehicle and in what areas that vehicle may not be delivering on all of the positive experiences that were hoped for.”

The APEAL study has recently been updated to reflect how the automotive market has changed. The change in technology, the improving build quality of vehicles and the fact that many cars don’t break down anywhere near as much has all been factored into the new study.

That means design, emotional attachment, performance and onboard technology are now more influential to a buyer’s satisfaction. That has been reflected in the updated survey.

“It has become more and more important, said Sargent that a vehicle be “compatible with other parts of their life, like their phone. Most consumers would rather change their brand of vehicle than their brand of phone.” Owners of vehicles with Apple CarPlay tended to give their vehicles better scores.”

Bring on the Dodge

Dodge has worked incredibly hard to pull itself up from industry hanger-on to industry leader. Not all that long ago it didn’t have a great reputation with customers or the wider industry but over the past few years has made massive strides in manufacturing quality, build quality, design and customer satisfaction.

Those improvements are now bearing fruit. This APEAL study and the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study prove it.

Don’t forget. Dodge has made these improvements while other automakers were also making theirs. This isn’t a static playing field by any means. Every automaker from every region works incredibly hard to raise their game and be known as the best.

Any improvement that has seen Dodge leapfrog other automakers to lead the pack is doubly impressive!
