Dodge finally unleashes the beast!

640 × 346
After what seems like an endless series of teaser videos, leaks, sneak peeks and drip-fed information, we finally get to see what all the fuss is about. Dodge have finally revealed the 2018 Challenger SRT Demon at the New York International Auto Show.

Was it worth the wait?

2018 Challenger SRT Demon
Uh huh. Yes it was. The headline? The supercharged 6.2-litre Hemi Hellcat engine that has been tweaked to deliver 840 hp and 770 lb-ft of torque. To achieve those figures it will need race gas (100 octane). According to Dodge, it is so powerful at the rear wheels that it can pull wheelies.

In a show where the emphasis is very much on renewable, green, hybrid, electric, autonomous, low emission and gas mileage, the Demon does kind of stand out.

Dodge also said it can go 0 – 60 mph in 2.3 seconds while pulling 1.8G. It can do the quarter mile in 9.65 seconds at 140 mph too.

To achieve all this, Dodge have done a bit of work on that Hellcat motor. They have updated the gearing to improve torque delivery, they have elevated the rev limiter to 6,500 rpm and have fitted a new liquid-air cooler to keep everything frosty. There is also a transbrake for faster launches.

There is a new intake and supercharger too. It isn’t just any system, it has what is apparently the largest intake ever fitted to a production car. The 2.7-litre supercharger delivers 14.5 pounds of boost within six feet of hitting the accelerator.

Here is a video of it in action.

As well as being more powerful, the 2018 Challenger SRT Demon is also 200 pounds lighter than the Hellcat. It can be lightened further if you opt to remove the passenger seats, which is a factory option. As is the Demon Crate which gives you the bits necessary to run race gas and some trick aero elements for it you do take it to the track.

Best of all, the 2018 Challenger SRT Demon is made in Canada. It goes on sale later this year. Production will be limited to 3,300 units and will see for an undisclosed price. Only 300 of those units will be making up north though so you had better order fast!
