Corvetter C8 Vs. Durango SRT Hellcat in a Drag Race
Posted on July 26, 2021
We don’t often feature this type of head to head drag race because they don’t reflect the everyday life most cars live. However, this one is an exception. A Hennessy-modified Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat goes head to head with a Corvette C8 and leaves it in the dust.
Really in the dust.
As you can see, this is no ordinary Durango. This started out as an SRT Hellcat but was then given the Hennessy treatment. Specifically, the HPE1000 performance upgrade.
As if the SUV wasn’t insanely powerful to begin with, the American tuner took that and raised it for a full house.
Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat
The Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat is something only a company like Dodge would come up with. A full-size SUV with the supercharged V8 Hellcat engine bolted onto the front.
That gives it a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph, with seating for all the family.
This is a three row, six seat SUV designed using the current Durango with similar looks as the standard model. It’s a large SUV with big front end, high body, long chassis and plenty of space but it also looks good.
It has a sporty edge like most Dodge vehicles. Even the non-SRT version looks good.
The SRT version adds stripes, a hood scoop, unique wheels, red brake calipers, special trim elements and SRT badging.
Inside, the Durango has a driver-centric dashboard with lots of buttons to press and screens to look at. There’s a very busy, but very clear, instrument panel and a centre stack with large screen.
The SRT steering wheel is festooned with buttons, as is the console under the screen.
The rest of the vehicle has less going on with comfortable seating in three rows, lots of storage, plenty of glass keeping the cabin light and airy and a feeling of luxury with lovely materials and contrasting stitching.
Engine and mechanicals
The Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat uses the 6.2-litre Hellcat V8 with a 2.4-litre supercharger attached. It delivers 710 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque and uses an 8 speed automatic transmission to deliver that power through all four wheels.
It’s a smooth drive with that reassuring whine of the supercharger. While the design may look largely anonymous, you won’t be sneaking up on anybody with that engine!
With switchable driving modes, you can tweak the experience a little for everyday driving and for having fun when the family is at home.
While not for everyone, we think the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat balances the practicality of an SUV, the ability to perform daily duties when required and then let rip at the weekend well. So well in fact, that it could almost become addictive!
