Dodge Durango might get eTorque mild hybrid system

Dodge Durango might get eTorque mild hybrid system

The Dodge Durango may be the next model to benefit from Chrysler’s mild hybrid system that we see in the Ram 1500 eTorque. It’s a strong rumour that has yet to be confirmed by Dodge or anyone at FCA but is a likely step given the direction the auto industry is travelling in right now.

The same system that drives the Ram also features in a couple of Jeep Wranglers and has been expected to spread across the range once it proved itself worthy. Having done that and more in the Ram 1500, it may now be shifting across to the Dodge Durango in its next model.

eTorque

eTorque is a mild hybrid system that replaces the alternator and works as both a hybrid power system with electric motors and helps the engine start quickly when paired with the stop/start technology that comes with it.

Along with a 48 volt electrical and battery pack, the system delivers torque at lower revs where an engine traditionally struggles to generate much power of its own while it is spooling up. Once the engine is up to power, the eTorque system pulls back and provides mild electrical assistance as you drive.

There is no peak torque benefit to eTorque. Instead, if you haul at lower speeds or struggle to get up to power or speed in difficult situations, such as pulling a boat out of the water, eTorque generates extra torque at lower revs until the engine can deliver its own. It’s an excellent system that doesn’t compromise the engines it is part of while boosting them where they would struggle.

There is also a minor gas mileage boost to eTorque of around 1 mpg depending on what engine or vehicle you use it with.

2020 Dodge Durango

The 2020 Dodge Durango uses similar V6 and V8 engines to the Ram 1500 so the idea of using eTorque is a logical one. The SUV is often used to haul leisure equipment and for family duties so having more torque on tap at lower revs could be of a real benefit.

The current Durango is a great looking SUV with seating for up to 7 people, great design and a very stable platform. Even though it is largely unchanged for a few years now, the Durango still delivers an enviable driving experience.

It uses either a 3.6-litre V6 that delivers 293 hp or a 5.7-litre Hemi V8 that delivers 360 hp. Both use an eight speed automatic transmission to send power to the rear or all wheels.

The 2020 Dodge Durango is an excellent SUV that will only get better with eTorque. Learn more about this SUV at Unique Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, 915 Walkers Line, Burlington, ON  L7N 3V8.
