Buying a car online is becoming much more popular

Thanks to changing buying behaviour, accelerated by coronavirus, more people than ever before are buying cars online. We buy groceries online. We buy clothes and shoes online, so why not cars?

The vast majority of car buyers already perform their research online. They check online reviews, read test drive data and professional test drives. They compare prices, models and dealerships too.

According to Autotrader, car buyers spend more time researching cars online than they do in the dealership.

So why not go all the way and buy the car online?

Autotrader also said car shoppers spent their time researching car prices (71%), finding actual cars listed for sale (68%), comparing different models (64%), finding out what a current car is worth (63%), and locating a dealer or getting dealer information (46%).

That data was apparently taken from across the car buying public, not just millennials so this is a genuine shift in behaviour.

Manufacturers have their own online sales portals and dealerships are slowing introducing theirs. Car Nation Canada has joined the movement too. If our customers want to buy their cars online, we will do everything we can to facilitate that!

Buying a car online

The gradual shift towards online car sales has been on the way for a while. Customers would regularly request the feature and dealerships were gradually introduced an online element to traditional the dealership setup. It takes a while as there is a lot to do but the shift is gaining momentum steadily.

Then came coronavirus.

Dealerships had to temporarily close, stores and restaurants closed and everything came to a halt. Suddenly, the established way of buying a car, by visiting the dealership, was a thing of the past. All those who had to buy a new car to get to work, to replace an old car or because they needed one, couldn’t buy one.

There was a demand we couldn’t fulfil. Some people had a genuine need to replace a car or buy a car and we couldn’t help. Not very easily anyway. Which is where our online car sales come in.

Once the infrastructure was in place and we had the staff, the training and the ability to service online sales quickly and efficiently, it was time to give the public what they want.
