The Bestselling Sports Car is the Ford Mustang

The Bestselling Sports Car is the Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang has won many accolades in its long history but one of the more important one reflects its popularity and profit for Ford. Two things that will guarantee its future going forward. As the Mustang has just had its 57th birthday, it’s fitting that it is the world’s bestselling sports car for the second year running. It is also the world’s bestselling sports coupe too!

It isn’t surprising really. The Mustang looks amazing, sounds superb and drives better than ever. What is surprising is that the Bullitt, Shelby GT350, Shelby GT350R and Shelby GT500 all led the charge!

“Mustang enthusiasts love their performance cars, and they showed that yet again,” said Hau Thai-Tang, chief product platform and operations officer, Ford Motor Company. “In a challenging year for the entire auto industry because of the global pandemic, Mustang performed very well, increasing its share in the global sports car segment.”

2021 Ford Mustang: The Bestselling Sports Car

The 2021 Ford Mustang is a superb way to have fun on four wheels. Even the base trims can be great fun while higher spec models have fun as standard.

The design is superb, with a mean looking front end, angled lights with LEDs, curved hood and raked windshield. Modest panel detailing down each side adds interest while a simple rear profile is what most people will see on the highway.

It’s a handsome car that looks sports but not outrageously aggressive.

Inside, the Mustang is the most comfortable yet. Front seats are comfortable, adjustable and supportive while the rears are fine for bags or children. Interior space is modest with everything directed toward the driver and that’s fine by us.

You won’t get four adults in a Mustang but two and two kids will be just fine.

Engine and drivetrain

The main interest for most Mustang owners is the engine and drivetrain. There are a few engines including the 2.3-litre turbocharged four cylinder all the way up to the 5.0-litre V8. Power is something you’re not short of whichever model you choose. Even the turbo four has enough to bring a smile to your face!

All use Ford’s superb 10 speed automatic transmission to send power to the rear wheels. It’s slick, smooth and makes for effortless gear changes however you drive. Some GT models use a 7 speed dual clutch transmission.

The Mustang can be soft and comfortable or rigid and sensitive depending on what model you choose. Each drives well and is one of the best cornering Mustangs ever. If handling is your thing, this is the generation to get!

The 2021 Ford Mustang has a five star safety rating from the US NHTSA so can be a practical car as well as a fun one. It isn’t over-endowed with safety features but that isn’t why you buy a Mustang.

Every model in the range is worth checking out but Mach 1 Premium or a GT 500 are the pinnacle of everyday motoring with plenty of spare power to have a little fun with.
