All change for the next Nissan Juke?

Rumours abound about the next generation of the Nissan Juke. One rumour is saying that the recent Nissan Gripz concept showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year will take over in terms of looks. Another rumour says the next gen Juke could be an EV.

The Nissan Juke is a polarizing car. You either love or hate its looks and if you love it, you really love it. Considering how many of these we have sold across our dealerships, we think more of you love them than hate them.

New look Juke
We covered the Nissan Grpiz CUV concept last September and we liked what we say. It was an understated vehicle despite being a concept. It took the current compact SUV shape and rounded off some of the bulkier edges while modernizing is across the board. Apparently inspired by the 1971 East African Safari-winning Datsun 240Z rally car, the Gripz certainly turned heads.

So rumours in the industry now say rather than the Gripz replacing the 370Z, it may be heralding a new look for the Juke.

Range-extended EV
As well as a slew of concepts, Nissan have also been working on their ‘Pure Drive e-Power’ powertrain. This is their new range extender technology that combines an electric vehicle with a gasoline engine to provide backup power for the batteries, but crucially, not for the wheels.

Nicknamed ‘REV’, this new design uses the current electric motor and batteries from the best-selling Nissan Leaf. It then packs in a small gasoline engine that acts as a power generator for those batteries. The combined output is expected to be in the region of 80kW and 254Nm (107 hp and 187 lb-ft of torque) which is around what the Leaf delivers.

There will also be normal engines for the next Juke to maximize popularity. A turbocharged 1.6-litre engine that delivers over 200 hp has been mooted but not yet confirmed with other gasoline engines being considered.
Nissan are planning a big reveal early next year with production thought to be slated for later in 2016. As development of the Pure Drive e-Power is said to be very advanced, it isn’t unreasonable to think it will also feature in other vehicles in the future.
