Kia has released details on the 2023 Kia Sportage, and it looks good. It builds on the redesign of the 2022 model and adds a lot more interior space into the mix.
It’s a solid design that elevates the Kia from the older models and brings it right up to date.
As crossovers go, the Sportage shows this segment still has plenty of space for innovation and for daring to be different.
2023 Kia Sportage design
The 2023 Kia Sportage continues the good work started by the 2022 model with the wide tiger nose grille and angular running lights.
Once you get used to the look, it quickly grows on you and looks much more attractive than the previous model.
The lower grill has some design flourishes while the tiger nose has the new Kia logo. The hood looks similar to the older car while the profile has a rising beltline and some detailing that makes it really stand out.
A sloping roofline slides down into an angular trunk with modest lights and a large Kia logo. The lower valance is high and provides a very small overhang.
Inside the Sportage
Inside the Sportage, you’ll see a large curved screen that includes both instruments and navigation in all but the base model. It’s a similar setup to the Mercedes-Benz display and is a joy to use.

Interior space is now much more generous, with a longer, wider wheelbase that translates to more passenger room.
Materials have gone up another notch, as has finishing. Everything feels quality, with solid switches and a reassuring thunk from each door.
Under the hood
The 2023 Kia Sportage has a couple of engine options, a 2.5-litre four cylinder, a 1.6-litre turbocharged hybrid and a plug-in hybrid with the same engine.
The 2.5-litre engine produces 187 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. It uses an 8 speed automatic to drive the front wheels.
The 1.6-litre turbo has 227 hp and a 44kW electric motor. It uses a 1.49kWh battery pack and a 6 speed automatic to provide more drive and electric-only drive.
The PHEV variant will use the same 1.6-litre engine but will add a larger motor and battery pack. Exact specifications have yet to be announced.
It is expected to have around 32 miles of electric-only range.
The 2023 Kia Sportage will be available with LED headlights with automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, active lane control, parking sensors, and a rear-occupant alert.
You will have the option to add blind-spot monitors, navigation-based adaptive cruise control, limited hands-free driving system and a surround-view camera system with birds-eye view.
All in all, the 2023 Kia Sportage seems a solid update that should help Kia continue its upward trajectory.
