The 2023 Kia Sportage has Been Uveiled

Kia unveiled the updated 2023 Kia Sportage last Wednesday and we think it looks good. Not only is it bigger and more powerful, it’s also more fuel efficient too!

The 2023 Kia Sportage is a compact crossover that has been around for ages. It’s a popular family car that is popular on Canada’s streets and for good reason.

It’s great value, offers decent road manners and room for all the family. So, does the new model measure up?

Sportage design

The new design brings the Sportage more into line with other refreshed Kia. It uses the new, wider tiger nose grille with angled LED lightings, a larger gap between it and the lower sill and a sportier look overall.

It’s angular in all the right ways, with sweeping lines in the bodywork, rising beltline, narrow windows down each side and a relatively small rear screen. What this will all do to visibility we do not know, but it looks good!

Inside, there’s a very modern dashboard with digital instruments and a large touchscreen, a central console between driver and passenger and some tidy touches up front.

We didn’t get to see much of the rear seats but we imagine they are as comfortable and spacious as the current versions, if not more so.

One nod to modern sensibilities was the inclusion of ‘vegan’ leather interior, which is a positive step.

Under the hood

The 2023 Kia Sportage gets a new engine in a 2.5-litre four cylinder. It produces 187 hp and will drive the front or all wheels. Details on other engine options and transmission have yet to be clarified.

“The available Active AWD system uses electro-hydraulic coupling with center-locking differential to actively distribute power between front and rear wheels depending on road and driving conditions,” the Kia release said.

That’s slightly more power than you get currently, which is good as the 2023 Kia Sportage is longer and wider than the current model. It also looks as though is sits slightly higher, but we’re not sure by how much.

According to the press release, the U.S. variant is 8% more efficient than the current model despite being larger and presumably, heavier.

The 2023 Kia Sportage will also get some new safety tech including the option for 360-degree Surround View Monitor with 3D View and the Blind-Spot View Monitor. The current safety tech will also remain available.

Overall, the updates to the new Sportage look positive. It looks more modern and in keeping with the new Kia design. It is larger, which is the usual now with most cars, but it’s also more powerful and more fuel efficient.

Not many automakers can achieve that!
