Introducing the 2023 Kia Niro EV and Hybrid

Introducing the 2023 Kia Niro EV and Hybrid

We had learned a little about the 2023 Kia Niro last year but for some reason, didn’t get the whole story. That changed last week when Kia outlined more about the new Niro PHEV and EV.

Both cars use the platform from the previous model rather than the new E-GMP. That means we have a good idea about what to expect.

The new Niro, like many news cars these days, is growing. It’s now 65mm longer 20mm wider and 10mm taller than last year’s model. The wheelbase is also 20mm wider too.

That space should be obvious within the cabin as Kia says that’s where it all goes. The wider wheelbase should also add more to stability, which might improve an already excellent ride.

2023 Kia Niro

The first thing that strikes you about the 2023 Kia Niro is the modernity of the design. It’s a superb look with an angular front end, complicated-looking light arrangement and nice grille and lower sill.

The two-tone look is also good. We don’t know whether production models will have that, but we sure hope so!

That two-tone look is more obvious at the rear where the colour rises at the rear quarter over to the lights. It’s a neat look that should go down well with buyers as long as the colour combination is a good one.

At the rear, it’s a simple design that looks a lot like a 2000-era Ford Focus. A simple tailgate, upright lights and a detailed lower sill with tailpipes.

Inside, you’ll see a new single dashboard with large digital screens and widescreen for infotainment and controls.

The design is simple, in a good way and provides a very uncluttered interior that we like.

There’s a definite aura of the future in that cabin. The dashboard flows either side of the front passengers to join the doors to create a cocoon style feel. It’s well done and looks the business.

2023 Kia Niro Hybrid

The 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid will have a 1.6-litre four cylinder engine that delivers 104 hp. It combines with a 8.9 kWh lithium-ion battery and electric motor to deliver a total of 139 hp.

It will use a 6 speed dual clutch automatic transmission to drive the front wheels.

The hybrid should be good for 50 mpg combined and around 26 miles of electric-only drive.

2023 Kia Niro EV

The 2023 Kia Niro EV will look and feel the same but will have a larger electric motor and battery pack. It will use a 64 kWh lithium-ion battery to deliver around 201 hp and around 239 miles of range.

We don’t know the transmission type in the EV but we do know it will drive the front wheels, just like the PHEV.

We should get more details on the 2023 Kia Niro soon.

I can’t say I’m a fan of this drip feed methodology automakers have adopted but it’s what we have to work with.
