2023 Ford F-150 EV teased
Posted on September 21, 2020
A teaser image for the 2023 Ford F-150 EV was teased last week during the announcement that Ford was updating the Rouge plant in Dearborn, Michigan ready to produce the electric truck.
Rouge has been producing trucks since 1948 and it’s fitting that the new 2023 Ford F-150 EV will be manufactured there too.
The image doesn’t show a great deal. We see what looks like the current F-150 front end and fenders but we also see a new light bar. The front end has a different grille design. Presumably because it won’t need a grille at all. Some think it will be a ‘frunk’. A front end trunk, which is possible.
Otherwise, the truck looks a lot like the current version.
More power to the people
Ford didn’t go into any detail about the truck as the announcement was about the plant. However, they have said the 2023 Ford F-150 EV will be more powerful than current trucks but with zero emissions.
Given that the most powerful F-150 delivers 450 hp, that’s a lot to look forward to!
The EV will feature a pair of electric motors that will provide drive and be able to act as a generator. The combination will work much like the option you can fit onto the standard F-150 to provide power at work sites.
This confirms that the 2023 Ford F-150 EV is designed for work. Where the standard truck has widened its appeal to leisure and truck fans, the EV is targeted specifically at those who use a truck to earn a living.
The announcement that brought on the teaser image was the news that Ford was investing $700 million USD into its Rouge plant. That money will go to create the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center which will manufacture the 2023 Ford F-150 EV.
The chassis will be produced in the new centre while the body will be produced on the standard F-150 line. The two will then meet and be put together alongside the electric motors and other components.
Part of the investment will go towards automation. The aim is to automate as much of the production as possible and invest in autonomous sleds for heavy items, a continuation of the collaborative robot plan they perfected in Germany and super-efficient logistics.
Those collaborative robots work alongside humans and perform key tasks while the human performs other tasks. It’s a system that is currently working well at Ford’s plant in Cologne and will be brought to the US.
The 2023 Ford F-150 EV is slated for a 2022 release and will be a 2023 model. We have a long while to wait before we get hands on with the Ford truck but I for one, am looking forward to it!
