The 2022 Kia Telluride is Simple Yet Complex

The 2022 Kia Telluride is Simple Yet Complex

The second large SUV of the week is the 2022 Kia Telluride. Kia’s answer to the Cherokee and the largest vehicle made by the Korean automaker.

It’s a similar size to the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L but has very different looks. The Kia is content to go its own way and we love it for that.

Telluride Design

The design of the 2022 Kia Telluride is simple but also complex. It has smooth lines, rounded edges, simple panel detailing and some technical bits up front.

The 2022 Kia Telluride brings a new look front end with different grille, new logo in the centre, vertical lights either side and some chrome elements to add interest. It’s a nice front with a mature aesthetic.

Chrome elements also appear elsewhere on the body. I’m not a fan of chrome but it looks in keeping here.

The rear is equally well designed. Most notable are the vertical taillights, but the empty space in the centre of the rear door and large screen are also obvious. Simple badging and a chrome lower sill complete the look.

Inside the Telluride, the cabin is equally simple and mature. Materials are top quality, the dashboard is simple, clear and configurable and the touchscreen is large and crystal clear.

It’s a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen is fast and responsive and delivers all the controls you’re ever likely to need.

Seats are comfortable in every row, with support where you need it and adjustability where you want it.

Engine and drivetrain

The 2022 Kia Telluride uses a single V6 engine to drive all variants of the SUV. It’s a 3.8-litre V8 engine that delivers 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque.

It uses an eight speed automatic transmission to power the front wheels with AWD as an option.

This is a big SUV but the engine is plenty enough to keep it going. The transmission is smooth and responsive, the suspension evens out uneven surfaces and the entire experience seems calm and composed.

We haven’t been able to drive this year’s model yet but we have been in a 2021 model and it was a nice place to spend time. As nothing about the chassis and running gear has changed this year, there is every reason to believe it will drive exactly the same.

Kia is known for safety and reliability. On the safety front, you can get automatic high-beams, a 360-degree camera system, Blind-Spot View Monitor, forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist and standard blind-spot monitoring.

Some of this is included within the trims while others will be extras.

We like the 2022 Kia Telluride. It’s an excellent alternative to mainstream SUVs and easily as comfortable. It drives well, offers a lot of interior space, feels much smaller than it is to drive and delivers excellent value.

It costs a whole lot less than the competition too!
