The 2022 Kia Sportage Is A Great SUV Option
Posted on June 16, 2021
We finally got to see the 2022 Kia Sportage without camouflage last week and it looks good! Kia has done an amazing job in keeping the familiarity of the Sportage while taking it into the future. We like what we see!
The 2022 Kia Sportage is now in its 5th generation and is a mainstay of the Kia lineup. It’s a solid option in the SUV market and needs to deliver to be able to compete.
Design and interior
The first thing you notice about the 2022 Kia Sportage is the front end. It has a kind of mashup fascia with lights beside the grille, strange shaped LED running lights, detailing above the grille and a lower fascia with fog lights.
It looks better than it sounds actually.
Kia has also moved away from the iconic tiger nose grille. It is now called the ‘Digital Tiger Face’. While the naming could do with some work, we like how it looks!
The profile starts lower at the front and rises towards the rear. The rear quarterlight is actually quite narrow thanks to a large waistline but actually looks very nice.
The rear has a light bar configuration with taillights either side. The lower panels continue their upward trajectory over some styling elements, twin tailpipe sections and angular areas around the trunk.
Inside, you get a modern cabin with driver-centric controls, digital dashboard, large centre screen and centre console. There’s a lot going on but it all looks logical and well made.
The two-tone cabin in the showcase model looks upscale, with lots of chrome trim. There seems to be a lot of glass too, offering plenty of light and good visibility.
Kia has made a lot of the materials in the cabin. They have said there will be ‘vibrant’ colour options and that they have used the highest quality materials to make the cabin a ‘special place to spend time’.
While we can’t tell much from an image, we definitely think it looks the part!
Under the hood
Kia has yet to tell us what will be under the hood but it is commonly thought it will follow Hyundai’s Tucson with a 1.6-litre petrol and hybrid and PHEV options.
The Tucson had gone down quite well where it has been released so we expect the Sportage to do the same.
Kia drivetrains seem to be able to deliver decent power with smooth transmissions and the right combination of frugality and interesting characteristics. There is no reason to doubt that the 2022 Kia Sportage will be anything different.
The global reveal will happen later this year. Presumably, this is when Kia will outline the powertrain and give us a lot more detail on what’s in store.
In the meantime, the current range of Sportage models deliver exceptional value for money along with similarly pleasing looks.
