All-New 2022 Kia Carnival Is a Very Versatile Minivan

The 2022 Kia Carnival is a minivan but the automaker doesn’t want you to pigeonhole it as just a people carrier. Kia wants you to consider it as a complete family vehicle capable of everything you want to throw at it.

The new ad is here:

"The Carnival MPV defines a new vehicle segment – the multi-purpose vehicle: versatile, capable, and comfortable, and provides owners what they need, when they need it," said Russell Wager, Kia's vice president of marketing for North America.

"From daily commuting and long-haul road trips to camping adventures, family vacations, and moving duty, the Carnival MPV easily transforms from a stylish and sophisticated adventurer to a cavernous cargo hauler. And everything in between."

So, the Carnival isn’t a minivan, it’s an MPV, multipurpose vehicle. It’s a term used more in global markets than North America but it is apt in many cases. MPV isn’t new either, despite what Kia says.

We rarely use a vehicle for a single reason. The entire premise of the crossover is to be a part time SUV, part time minivan or family hauler, enough to tow dirt bikes or jet skis and to carry mountain bikes at the weekend.

The Kia Carnival is going for a similar vibe.

2022 Kia Carnival

The Kia Carnival used to be the Kia Sedona, a minivan/MPV designed to survive family life. It’s a great looking vehicle that takes the somewhat frumpy appeal of a people carrier and brings it firmly up to date.

It’s a great design with new Kia front grille, new Kia logo, new lighting and a new more modern look. It’s more angular than preceding models yet still looks friendly and approachable.

Inside, the cabin is cavernous and very comfortable. The Carnival can seat up to 8 people and carry luggage in back. Seating is supportive in every row, front seats are adjustable, second row seats are upgradeable and you can have as much leather as you like.

Materials and finishing are top rate, probably some of the best to come out of Korea recently. The leather is lovely, there is storage everywhere and you can specify just about every comfort and amenity you can think of.

Engine and mechanicals

The 2022 Kia Carnival uses a 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces 290 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. It uses an eight speed automatic transmission to drive the front wheels.

This combination isn’t used in other Kia vehicles but it really should be. The engine is quiet, changes smooth and there is enough power to cope with any terrain. The ride is smooth and composed too, giving a very nice experience even on rougher roads.

There is no AWD or hybrid option yet but we imagine Kia is working on those as we speak.

The 2022 Kia Carnival comes standard with active lane control, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, driver attention warning and reverse parking sensors.

Higher trim models can come with high-speed automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, front parking sensors, surround cameras, blind-spot cameras and an interior camera.
