Check out the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Hybrid

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a flagship model and something the automaker needs to succeed. Like any update, any changes to the vehicle need to be carefully considered.

After the relaunch of the Grand Cherokee last year, we know Jeep had hit the nail on the head.

A solid update, great design, nice interior and some technology updates that brought the big Jeep bang up to date. All that was missing was an electrified version.

That’s what we have here in the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

Until now, the Grand Cherokee has been available in V6 or V8 guise. While both gave decent gas mileage for their size, they aren’t what many buyers are looking for.

That’s where the 4xe comes in.

The engine is a turbocharged four cylinder with an electric motor and 17.3-kwh battery pack to deliver a total of 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.

The battery has around 24 miles of electric range.

There’s a motor generator that replaces the starter and connects to the crankshaft using a belt. There’s also a full electric motor within the transmission to provide primary drive alongside the gas engine.

It’s exactly the same system that has performed so well in the Wrangler 4xe and is expected to do just as well here.

4xe driving modes

As well as the electric drivetrain, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe comes with three specific driving modes, Hybrid, e-Save and Electric.

Hybrid mode delivers best fuel economy. E-Save uses mainly the engine and saves battery power and Electric mode uses primarily electric drive but the engine will kick in when required to charge the battery.

That battery will charge in around 12 hours on a Level 1 charger or 3.5 on a Level 2.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

Aside from the PHEV drivetrain, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is exactly like you would expect.

Big inside, imposing to look at, luxurious and cossetting.

The seating position is high and offers great visibility. The seats are very comfortable and provide exactly the kind of experience you would expect.

Everything is well put together, switches are solid and reassuring and the technology mostly helps rather than hinders.

We haven’t had one to test yet, but Jeep assures us the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe will have the same off road capability as the gas engined versions, which should be enough for even the most intrepid explorer.

All wrapped up in a luxurious, quiet SUV.

We like the standard Grand Cherokee. It’s well put together, nice inside and nice to drive. There’s no reason the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe will be any different.

There is a price premium of course, but in return, you get an SUV with genuine green credentials that can outperform the V8. That has to be worth the investment, right?
