2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV Teased
Posted on July 21, 2021
After seeing the 2022 Jeep Compass, hearing about the Dodge electric muscle car and the Ram 1500 electrification program, we didn’t get time to mention that Stellantis also teased the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV.
We knew a hybrid or electric variant was coming but not exactly what or when. We still don’t know all the details but we did get to see the car and learn a little about what to expect.
2022 Grand Cherokee
The first good news is that the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV looks exactly like a Grand Cherokee should look. It’s big, polished, statuesque and all those other words we like to use.
The Jeep grille is still present, as is the big front end. Only this time, there’s a hatch over the left front fender where you can plug it in to charge.
Otherwise, the SUV looks much the same apart from unique wheels, coloured roof and 4xe badges.
That means a solid shape, smooth lines, modest panel detailing, a rounded rear end and narrow LED lighting at the back. It’s a big but not bulky vehicle and is still smaller than the Cherokee L.
4xe PHEV
The 4xe PHEV part of the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV is still a mystery. Not much was said about the engine and drivetrain, batteries, range or anything at all really.
We imagine it will be something similar to the Wrangler 4xe that uses a standard engine with hybrid motor and 17.3kWh battery pack to deliver 22 miles on electric power and extra torque assistance when going off road.
Stellantis are prioritizing its European markets with PHEVs and electrics first as the appetite is stronger there and many countries have already set dates for ending fossil fuel powered vehicles.
The announcement did say we should be getting all PHEV and EV models in Canada at some point to join that Wrangler 4xe.
Stellantis went on to say that by 2025, 70% of all vehicles it sells will be electrified. That means hybrid and electric, not just EV. That’s quite a goal with only 3.5 years to go!
As far as we can tell, the Wrangler 4xe has gone down well. The combination of capable gas engine and hybrid backup when you need it has proven very effective off road. How many people use the electric only power remains to be seen, but it’s there if you need it.
We’re looking forward to seeing the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV and other electrified models soon. If nothing else, to offer you more choice when selecting your next new car!
