2022 Ford Explorer ST May not be AWD

2022 Ford Explorer ST May not be AWD

Giving us an ST version of one of our favourite SUVs was one of the best things Ford ever did. It has a gutsy engine, good handling and AWD. Apparently, if rumours are true, Ford are dropping the AWD in favour of RWD.

While that’s not such bad news for many, the Explorer rarely goes off road in most cases anyway, those of us who drive in ice and snow will miss the feature.

The good news is that Ford isn’t dropping AWD altogether. Rather, it is switching it from standard to an option which you’ll need to check the box for when ordering your 2022 Ford Explorer ST.

It’s a shame we’ll now have to pay extra for this important feature but at least they aren’t dropping it completely!

2022 Ford Explorer ST

The Ford Explorer ST is an awesome SUV. It’s more understated than a Durango yet more interesting than most other SUVs. Especially when it comes in that lovely blue colour.

The Ford Explorer ST uses a 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6 engine that delivers 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. It uses Ford’s 10 speed automatic transmission to drive all wheels, soon to be rear wheels as standard.

The design uses the standard Explorer design but includes some small changes that seems to somehow upgrade the whole look and feel. There’s also no chrome, which is a good thing, as it’s mainly black trim.

The model pictured, with the blue colour, black trim and black wheels is probably the best looking SUV around.

Inside, you get a light and comfortable cabin with three rows, lots of glass and even more light if you spec the panoramic sunroof. The driving position is high with great visibility and comfortable seating.

The second row seats are also comfortable and have a neat switch that moves them out of the way so you can get into the third row. Behind that third row is space for family luggage, groceries or general cargo.

The large 10.1 inch vertical screen is unique to the ST and Platinum and provides easy access to controls, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, WiFi and all the other features.

The Ford Explorer has a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration thanks to standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross-traffic alert and lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist.

Despite stiffer suspension and more push from the engine, the Ford Explorer ST is as much fun as a daily driver or family cruiser as it is giving it full beans around a track. It’s surprisingly poised for an SUV and is testament to how well Ford now builds vehicles.

We cannot think of one situation where the Explorer ST couldn’t work or fit perfectly. It is that good.
