The Only Car Selling Guide you'll Ever Need [2022]

The Only Car Selling Guide you'll Ever Need [2022]

We have put together a car selling guide to help you sell your used car in Ontario, but these tips are helpful for most parts of Canada.

In Ontario, you cannot privately sell your used car without using the official kit that the government approves. You can order the kit, and it will come in the mail after a few days. No one likes red tape, but at least you know about it in advance.

Nothing is more frustrating than finding someone who wants to buy your used car right away, but you can’t sell it because you don’t have the correct paperwork.

Are you the original owner of the vehicle?

Suppose you are the original owner of the vehicle. In that case, you will need to produce a copy of the official lien release and the service record of the vehicle.

Prospective buyers typically want to get the VIN for the car and look it up on CarFax. This platform lets people find out if the vehicle was involved in any accidents or if there was anything substantial wrong with the car.

This service is not perfect, but it gives buyers an added degree of comfort when buying a used car.

If you are not able to find the lien release, we strongly recommend you get a copy from the lender as soon as possible. You will not be able to get any firm offers on your used car until you can prove there are no active liens.

Prepping your car for sale

You will need to get your vehicle ready to sell, bring it to the car wash and have it detailed by a professional. If your car looks dirty, it will impact the number of offers you get, and the perceived value of the car will also be diminished. It will cost you some money upfront but think of it as an investment that will pay off when you do sell the used car.

Getting your used car viewed by as many prospective buyers as possible

To borrow an expression from real estate “location, location, location,” if you want your used car to sell quickly, you need to get it in front of as many qualified buyers as possible. If you notice, we put the word “qualified” in there.

While many people may want to buy your car, you are only interested in those that have the ability and are therefore qualified to purchase the vehicle.

Platforms like Kijiji Autos and AutoTrader are popular with most people in Ontario.

Pain free way to sell your used car for quick cash

Another lesser-known way to sell your used car for quick cash is to bring it to a dealership. Most people trade in their car when they buy a new one, but you can sell your used car to the dealership for cash.

The dealership would need to conduct an appraisal to determine what your vehicle is worth and make a cash offer based on the appraisal. Once you accept this non-binding offer, you will be paid right away.

As you can see from our car selling guide, there are many different ways you can turn your used car into cash; the question is, which one will you choose?
