2021 Mazda3 could get turbo and AWD

Good news for those of us who drive in the cold, the 2021 Mazda3 may be coming with AWD. It’s a rumour right now but it apparently comes from a Mazda dealership who spied the 2021 model codes mentioning a turbocharger and all-wheel drive.

If true, this would be great news. While the FWD configuration of the current model is very competent, AWD would add confidence here for when things get cold and icy. Sure, adding a turbo could make life interesting on the ice but at least all four wheels would have drive!

The Mazda3 has had a turbo before and it worked well. This variant is likely to be mated with either a lower output engine to help gas mileage or as a special edition delivering more power. I think the former is most likely.

The downside is that the rumour also mentioned that any turbo models would be auto only. The source of that rumour said the turbo engine came with the ‘6A’ designation which apparently means automatic transmission. That doesn’t mean there won’t be a manual option but does temper our excitement somewhat.

The source of the rumour is said to be credible but we will have to wait and see just how credible. In the meantime, the standard Mazda3 is still a compelling option.

2020 Mazda3

The 2020 Mazda3 is a small car competing well with the increasing size creep of personal vehicles. Despite the shift towards crossovers, trucks and SUVs, this diminutive car easily holds its own, both on the road and in dealerships.

The 2020 Mazda3 is a compact car available as a sedan or hatch. Both designs display the usual Mazda aesthetics. A signature grille, angled lighting arrangement, sharp lower sill, raked windshield and modest panel detailing down the length of the car.

A tidy rear end in both configurations means this car is attractive from any angle.

Mazda is known for the quality of its interiors and that’s no different here. Materials quality is high, finishing is excellent and the entire cabin is a nice place to spend time.

Under the hood is a 2.5-litre four cylinder that produces 186 hp. It has a cylinder deactivation system to help gas mileage and uses a 6 speed automatic transmission to send power to the front wheels. Manual is an option too.

Like all Mazda cars, the Mazda3 sits on a very competent chassis and has a very stable suspension setup. Drive is dynamic and feedback is good on all surfaces. With minimum roll and great poise, the car manages to be reactive and also comfortable. It’s a great balance and something most owners end up enjoying.

The 2020 Mazda3 comes with adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, blind-spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alerts. This gave the Mazda three a Top Safety Pick award from the US IIHS and Top Safety Pick+ from the NHTSA.
