The 2021 Kia Stinger GT has been spied being tested in the wild. It is heavily camouflaged and doesn’t tell us much we didn’t already know but it shows the Korean automaker is still actively developing cars. It also tells us a new Stinger is on the way.
As you can see, the car is heavily camouflaged and doesn’t give much away. That said, the images also show that changes, if any, are going to be subtle. Put this image together with the current Stinger and the two will be very similar indeed.
Bringing the changes
The Kia Stinger has always been a halo car. A vehicle to prove what Kia can achieve rather than a sales leader. In that it excels. It is also a niche car ideal for discerning drivers who don’t want to drive the same cars as everyone else while not missing out on performance or features.
We don’t know what is coming for the 2021 Kia Stinger but we have a good idea. Earlier spy shots showed a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine being tested at Kia. It will appear in the Optima and Genesis sedans and is said to deliver around 285 hp. That’s 30 more than the current 2.0-litre turbo engine.
Of more interest for the GT is another motor being tested, a new 3.5-litre twin turbo V6 that delivers around 380 hp. This could replace the current 3.3-litre twin turbo unit that delivers 365 hp. Again, that engine will also sit in some Genesis vehicles too.
Other spy shots have shown quad tail pipes, a single LED light bar at the rear and a larger infotainment screen. There are also rumours that the quad exhaust could be a variable unit but we don’t know anything more yet.
Kia had initially said a new Stinger would be unveiled in July so let us see if this remains true.
2020 Kia Stinger
The 2020 Kia Stinger is an exercise in what is possible when you put your mind to it. It is possible to have a sports car that isn’t German. It is possible that a Korean automaker can produce something to rival our domestic brands. It is also possible to drive something other than a truck or crossover.
The design is superb and illustrates just how far Kia has come over the years. It’s a very competent design with a long low hood, raked windshield, curved roof and a hatch at the back. It’s a very attractive car that seems content to sit there looking like it knows its business.
Inside, the cabin is more spacious than you might think. The seating is comfortable everywhere, leather is lovely and soft if you spec it so, the driving position is low but has great visibility and the controls are exactly where they should be.
With some strong engines, great transmission and Top Safety Pick+ rating from the US IIHS, the Kia Stinger is a strong car in every meaning of the word.
