2021 Kia Sorento details released

2021 Kia Sorento details released

We were supposed to be able to get up close and personal with the 2021 Kia Sorento at the Geneva Auto Show but that was cancelled. Instead, Kia released some official images a couple of days ago and has now released the full specs of the 2021 Kia Sorento.

In what I hope is a temporary setup, automakers are releasing vehicles via email and the web. There was also a global reveal event on the Kia Facebook page to coincide with the release of the specifications. It was interesting but nothing like seeing a car in the flesh!

2021 Kia Sorento

The 2021 Kia Sorento is a solid looking SUV with a very modern profile. It is along the lines of the Skoda Kodiaq or newer Volkswagen Tuareg. More angular with more distinct edges and detailing on most panels to add interest.

The Sorento has a rounded front end with a modern take on the tiger nose with integrated lighting at either corner, An integrated lower sill adds another grille and what looks to be some running lights too.

A static beltline keeps things even along with a set of large alloys and reasonable ground clearance to give the Sorento a balanced look. A rolling roofline starts high over the windshield and rolls gently down to the rear hatch and a set of attractive LED taillights either side of a very angular licence plate area inset into the hatch.

Inside, the images Kia have released show a light interior with two-tone finishing with some lighter trim. A modest touchscreen sits atop the centre stack while a small instrument panel is placed directly in front of the driver. I’m not personally a fan of the black and tan look but the quality of the leather and finishing looks excellent, at least, on those images.

Under the hood

The North American version of the 2021 Kia Sorento is likely to get two engine options. A gas engine and a hybrid. The gas engine is a 2.5-litre turbo four that produces 277 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque.

The hybrid is a 1.6-litre turbo four with a 1.49kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack and a 44.2-kW electric motor. Output is rated at 227 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The hybrid uses a six speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels using an electronic version of a differential to send “the full power of the engine and motor to be transferred in parallel with minimal loss of energy.”

You can expect the full suite of safety tech to be present on all trim levels of the Sorento. Kia likes to collect Top Safety Pick awards and I don’t see the Sorento being any different.
