2021 Kia Seltos in Super Bowl ad

2021 Kia Seltos in Super Bowl ad

Kia has always spent big on its advertising, fighting many other companies for that coveted spot on the most-watched few hours on US TV, the Super Bowl. With a few seconds of airtime costing many millions of dollars, automakers have to make sure their cash and their time is spent wisely. That’s something Kia has done again this year.

Kia’s 2020 Super Bowl ad promoted the 2021 Kia Seltos alongside running back Josh Jacobs from the Oakland Raiders. It’s the usual emotional advertising, telling Josh’s story while driving a Seltos and narrating. Despite that, it’s a high quality ad with decent production value and is certainly head and shoulders above the normal ads we see during the Super Bowl.

Here’s the video:

2021 Kia Seltos

The Seltos is a newcomer to the Kia range but it is obvious that the Korean automaker has poured everything they know about making cars into it. It shares a platform with the Hyundai Kona and delivers a solid crossover SUV that can comfortably transport the family.

The design is typical Kia. Smooth lines, minimal panel detailing, very modern lighting and the tiger nose front and centre. The vehicle has a more rugged look than usual, with elements of the Nissan Pathfinder at the rear end with its flared wheel arches, rising rear quarterlights and roof rail, but it is all Kia.

Inside, the Seltos continues the modernity with a series of quality materials, a large touchscreen, comfortable seating and reassuringly solid switches and controls. Seating is comfortable, leg and head room seems generous and there is even some decent cargo space in back behind the rear seats.

Under the hood

Under the hood will be a normally aspirated 2.0-litre four that delivers 146 hp or a turbocharged 1.6-litre that delivers 175 hp. The NA engine uses a CVT transmission while the turbo uses a seven speed automatic to drive the front or all wheels. Both engines should be lively and frugal delivering the usual balance we expect from Kia.

The 2021 Kia Seltos will be available with automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist and a range of other safety tech. This being a brand new model, the US IIHS and NHTSA have yet to work their magic and give it a safety rating. Given Kia’s reputation in safety, we expect the Seltos to be a top performer.

The Super Bowl ad was pretty good as far as these things go but I expect the 2021 Kia Seltos to perform better than the Raiders during 2020. Visit Georgetown Kia, 199 and 314 Guelph Street, Georgetown, Ontario to learn more about the new SUV.
