2021 Kia Seltos at the Montreal Auto Show

2021 Kia Seltos at the Montreal Auto Show

After initially showing at the LA Auto Show, the 2021 Kia Seltos has finally made its way to Canada. The new Kia crossover was shown last week at the 2020 Montreal Auto Show. We got at a good look at the new Kia in LA but we managed an even closer look at our home auto show.

We like the design of the small SUV. It’s compact and stylish and could work in almost any situation. Kia’s marketing blurb says the Seltos would be comfortable everywhere, “from urban alleyways to Prairie straightaways”. For once, we would agree with the marketing as it genuinely would look comfortable anywhere.

2021 Kia Seltos

The 2021 Kia Seltos is aimed firmly at the crossover market that is growing here in Canada like everywhere else. While Kia has the Sorento and Sportage, the automaker needs a smaller vehicle to compete with the likes of the Ford Kuga or Mazda CX-30 and the Seltos is it.

The design is modern and compact while having soft edges and wide appeal. It uses a smoother version of the tiger nose and angled lighting Kia is famous for and it works well. The badging has been moved from the grille to the hood and while a small thing, it makes a big difference.

The rest of the design is also smooth, with very little panel detailing except rounded fluting on the doors, a mildly sloping roof, a small rooftip spoiler and some neat lights at the back.

Again we didn’t get to spend too much time looking inside but the cabin looks to be tidy, well thought-out and have nice seating. The driving position looks good too with what appear to be digital instruments, a small touchscreen in the centre stack.

Seltos mechanicals

There will be two engines for the 2021 Kia Seltos. There will be a 2.0-litre four cylinder that will produce 146 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque and a 1.6-litre turbo four that will produce 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Both will use a CVT transmission to send power to the front or all wheels. The SX Turbo model will use a 7 speed automatic with dual clutch.

All new Seltos will come with blind spot monitoring, rear occupant alert, rear cross-traffic alert and a rearview camera. There will presumably be a ton of optional equipment as is usually the way with Kia.

Pricing has been announced too. The 2021 Kia Seltos will start at around $22,995 and the orders books are open now. Visit Georgetown Kia, 199 and 314 Guelph Street, Georgetown, Ontario to learn more about the Kia Seltos.
