2021 Kia Optima GT confirmed

2021 Kia Optima GT confirmed

It seems we can put another rumour to bed this week as Kia has announced the 2021 Kia Optima GT. Having been rumoured for a while and with the discussions around Optima/K5 naming also hitting the news, Kia has announced the new vehicle but not the new name.

The 2021 Kia Optima GT was unveiled in Korea and it is likely to be a very similar car that we get here in Canada. It features great new looks, a slimmer front end, more panel detailing all over the car and a sporty profile that looks the business!

The 2021 Kia Optima GT will have a 2.5-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine that generates 286 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. It will come with an eight speed dual clutch transmission with torque converter and will be FWD and AWD.

Inside, the Optima will be similar to existing models but will feature a digital instrument cluster, 10.25” centre screen and an optional heads-up display.

The Korean release for the 2021 Kia Optima GT is Q1 2020. We expect it to hit North America in Q2 or Q3. I’ll update you once I know for sure.

2020 Kia Optima

The 2020 Kia Optima sits in that midsize sedan sweet spot. It remains a true sedan yet offers similar flexibility and space as a crossover. It also looks good enough to tempt buyers away from crossovers to stick with what is a very attractive car.

The 2020 Kia Optima is a four door sedan that looks much more expensive than it is. A sleek profile, attractive exterior, sporty dimensions and low front end are very pleasing to the eye. Inside, the cabin is well appointed and can be downright luxurious if you want it to be. It is also spacious, full of technology and has great sound insulation.

Under the hood is either a 2.4-litre four cylinder with 185 hp, a turbocharged 2.4 with 178 hp or a turbocharged 2.0-litre four with 245 hp. All use a six speed automatic or 7 speed dual clutch transmission to send the power to the front or all wheels. There is also a hybrid variant that uses a 2.0-litre engine with a 1.6-kwh battery pack for 192 hp and a PHEV with a 9.8-kwh battery pack and 202 hp.

This being Kia, safety kit is plentiful. The Optima can come with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitors, active lane control, adaptive cruise control and other goodies. This all allowed the IIHS to award the Optima Top Safety Pick+ as long as you specify the LED lights.

The 2020 Kia Optima offers a lot of car for the money with it’s stellar warranty and reliability. Visit Georgetown Kia, 199 and 314 Guelph Street, Georgetown, Ontario for a test drive.
